Speakers to Offer Better Business Practices During June Market
DALLAS – April 15, 2010 – Dallas Market Center, the world’s most complete wholesale
marketplace, recently announced guest speakers for the Dallas Total Home & Gift Market
taking place June 23-29, 2010. The speakers and their programs are as follows:
Richard Fenton and Andrea Waltz will share their “Go for No! Profit Generating Philosophy.”
One of the single greatest things a business owner can do is learn how to proactively drive
customer interactions and hear "no" more often. This counter-intuitive sales philosophy will
have retailers looking at their business in an entirely new way. This strategy can dramatically
increase sales, remove negative feelings about hearing "no,” eliminate business "slumps,” and
explode income. The program will take place at noon Thursday, June 24 in the Seminar Suite
9065, World Trade Center (WTC). Boxed lunches will be available for $5.
After spending the majority of their careers in the retail industry, Fenton and Waltz launched
their company more than a decade ago to provide solutions that help retailers increase sales,
improve service, and lead store teams. They have worked with independent retailers and
associations as well as large corporations like JCPenney, Pep Boys, and Build-A-Bear
Workshop, Inc. They are authors of several books including Go for No!, Retail Magic and
PLUCK! Providing Courageous Take Charge Retail Service.
Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, will present “Color
Trends: The Catalysts That Create Change.” In today’s complex and challenging marketplace,
color has the unique ability to attract and engage the eye, elicit emotion, enhance the product
or environment, and ultimately tempt the consumer. It is the catalyst that can spark the sale,
define the space, and create the magic and the mood. Her program will be Friday, June 25 at
noon in the Seminar Suite 9065, WTC. Boxed lunches will be available for $5.
Eiseman has been called "the international color guru." Her color expertise is recognized
worldwide, especially as a prime consultant to Pantone, Inc. She has helped many companies
make the best and most educated choice of color for product development, logos and
identification, brand imaging, packaging, Web sites, point of purchase, interior/exterior design
and any other application where color choice is critical to the success of the product or
environment. She heads the Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training and is also
executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Become a Better Person
15/04/10 11:54 Filed in: Success Scoop
(StatePoint) The world is full of ethical dilemmas: moments when people have the opportunity to make split-second decisions to do the right thing. But if recent news is any indicator, many make the wrong choices.
Hardly a month goes by without another story about an executive, sports figure or ordinary mom or dad behaving unethically and even criminally.
But how tough is it to become prouder of the person in the mirror? Knowing the basic difference between right and wrong isn't enough.
"All too often, there are factors that distort our perception of right and wrong, so we actually believe unethical behavior is normal and appropriate," says clinical psychologist Robert Hoyk, the author of the new book, "The Ethical Executive," which examines the causes of unethical behavior and the psychological traps we need to avoid.
"One look at the Wall Street crisis and the scandalous behavior of leading politicians leaves little doubt we need more responsible behavior from our leaders," he adds.
Recognize the Traps
In our everyday lives, especially at work, there are many psychological traps into which we risk falling. We are susceptible to them due to such psychological issues as low self-esteem, guilt and competition. By identifying many of these traps beforehand, maintaining ethical behavior gets easier.
For example, just because your boss or an authority figure orders you to do something, doesn't make it right. Blind obedience to authority can lead you down unethical paths, say experts. And just because those around you do something, doesn't mean you should.
"The vast majority of people care about ethics, but are vulnerable to traps. Good intentions aren't enough to avoid these pitfalls. You need to be aware of things that distort our perception of right and wrong," says Hoyk, whose new book outlines 45 traps that await us daily. For more information, visit www.theethicalexecutive.com.
And how we handle situations at work dictates our behavior at home and vice versa.
Take the Time
Our work and home lives are built on foundations of human relationships. Taking a moment to offer an encouraging word to a co-worker can motivate and provide the same positive energy as telling family members you love them.
Volunteer Your Time
Offer some of your personal or business resources for those less fortunate. Aside from helping others, volunteering time or money provides opportunities to integrate your family, friends and co-workers into activities that help establish strong patterns of ethical behavior.
Becoming a better person is about being better aware of both ethics and psychology -- those cues in our daily lives and within ourselves that drive our actions.
"Ethics need to be integrated with psychology," stresses Hoyk, who is donating 15 percent of the proceeds of his book to Health Span International Foundation. "Ethics tells us what we should be doing and psychology can help us stop immoral behavior and motivate us to do the right things."

Gavina Coffee, a 100-year-old successful family-owned and operated coffee roasting business, marked the month of March with a salute to women. In honor of Women’s History Month in the U.S., the sons of company founder, Don Francisco recognized two women who had made historically significant contributions to the success of the business: Anatolia Etcheverry-Gavina (their late mother), and Leonor Gavina-Vails (sister).
Company president, Pedro Gavina, prides the role of women in the success of F. Gavina and Sons, Inc.. “Women in our organization are part of our culture, environment, innovation and success,” he says. Vice-president of marketing, Leonor Gavina-Valls, plays a significant role in directing Gavina’s efforts in the community. Through her leadership, Gavina donates coffee as as funds to many local and global organizations and charities. This past year, Gavina made contributions to Coffee Kids, Grounds for Health, macy’s Passport Program for HIV/AIDS Awareness and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Organization. Mother's Day Gardening Gift
04/04/10 17:23 Filed in: Gift Tips

Mother’s Day calls for inventory additions. But in a tight economy, it makes sense (cents!!!!) to plan purchases carefully so that whatever you buy can be used into multiple seasons. This design makes the best of cross-over inventory. The boxes (Boxco) are vibrant enough for spring and summer general occasions, and just the right blend of perky and pastel to work beautifully for Mother’s Day. Gardening-theme gifts are also good general occasion gifts, since this theme can be used for get well, to cheer you, thanks, birthday, and a host of other events.
The gifts used in this design were a bit pricey (about $30 retail from a local gardening store), so it was important to fill space in the large container efficiently. To do so, a coordinating gift box (matching the large base) was turned at an angle and this filled almost half of the base container. The elevation added interest to the design and provided added value to the smaller packets of muscle soak arranged in the box. By putting a fluffy bow inside this smaller angled box, the space is filled nicely, and the design is soaked with color! Finished and wrapped, the impressive Mother’s Day design stands about three and a half feet tall. With items purchased retail, the gift would most likely bear a finished price of $90 - $125. With wholesale gift components, the finished design would be more in a good selling range of $65 - $80.
Design Note: The curved lines of the leaf-shaped knee pad bring out the line motif in the boxes. Excellent find (Tuesday Morning) at $1.99 retail.
Gift components used in this design:
- tall cone of potpourri
- flower pot accents (mushroom and flower)
- gardening gloves
- gardener-theme hand lotion and bath gel
- muscle soak salts
- herbal sachet
- floral-theme garden ornament
- leaf-shaped knee pad
Containers used in this design are from Boxco.
